About DC comics

Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson founded the company in 1934. Pioneering the concept of comics in original stories and content, it was launched as National Allied Publications or NAP. NAP published a series of Detective Comics, which went successful that its popularity skyrocketed. In 1977, the company’s name was changed into DC Comics originating from the initials “DC” that came from the series “Detective Comics.”

Even before the name was changed into DC Comics, NAP’s ownership had changed. Kinney National Company purchased NAP in 1969. However, in 1972, the company was split into two. Warner Communications, Inc purchased the entertainment asset. In 2016, AT&T purchased the company and became the owner of the DC comics under the DC Entertainment.
