About Mitchell & Ness

Mitchell & Ness were founded by Frank P. Mitchell and Charles M. Ness. Mitchell was a former Amateur Athletic Union champion while Ness was a golfer in Scotland. At first, they hand-crafted tennis rackets and customized golf clubs from imported materials. The business grew and expanded its items to baseball and football uniforms.

From 1933 to 1963, Mitchell & Ness supplied the Philadelphia Eagles’ team jerseys and equipment in the National Football League. The Mitchell & Ness jerseys became popular, and so the label was seen at a major baseball league, the Philadelphia Athletics, in 1938. After a decade, the label Mitchell & Ness was also seen in high school and college sports uniforms and jerseys throughout Philadelphia.

Through the years, Mitchell & Ness went through ups and downs. The company even stopped selling Mitchell & Ness jersey and team uniforms but concentrated on the retail business. Soon enough, it became the leading outlet for ski and hockey gear or equipment.

Like other businesses, Mitchell & Ness also went through bankruptcy. In 1983, the company closed two warehouses and fired all employees, ending up with a little store. However, in 1985, after repairing an old uniform made from wool flannel, the company came out with the idea of reproducing wool-flannel jerseys and uniforms.

In 1999, the company expanded and introduced the Hardwood Classics collection of the NBA basketball jerseys. The following year, the Throwback Collection for Football was released. The sales went doubled, and the company was even granted the right to remake the National Hockey League vintage sweaters in 2002. Adidas purchased Mitchell & Ness in 2007, and in 2016, it was sold to Juggernaut Capital Partners.
